Like it’s alive!
Here we have JC showing off what’s she’s all about! Cybernetic research is her jam, and this prototype is the tip of her research’s iceberg. Em is clearly excited to see where this goes!

JC is coming out of her shell and wants to show Emily firsthand what she’s been working on. Fun fact: when I first inked this page, it dawned on me that Em was much bigger than the Bunny Brews door lol. Sooo the window had a redo. Stretched to the right, and the interior was redrawn. Did I nail it? 😀
JC and Em’s meetups have become routine. JC decides it’s time to pick Em’s brain a little and see what makes her tick. I liked drawing this page – it was a fun exercise figuring out a way to make series of panels of two women chatting at a cafe booth come across more entertaining than just chatting, so I showed this through Em’s body language and JC’s hand gestures and subtle head tilt. We’re about to leave Bunny Brews, so stay tuned!
On this page, my first idea was to redraw the first few pages all over again – albeit with slight differences in facial expressions and dialog – to emphasize the routine they’ve established. Then, as I began drawing that first rehashed page, I decided it would be a nice change to instead incorporate some inner monologue from JC while still presenting the main page from that first day at Bunny Brews, this time with Emily waving to JC.
This page was really fun to draw! I threw a little of my old school comic flair in there with the unconventional borders, and I tried to show the many emotions JC goes through on one page. What do you think?
On this page, I wanted to express Emily’s playful nature, so she is teasing JC about seeing her robot really soon. I also wanted to convey in the art style that there are no rules to these characters other than certain physical features. This allows me to get playful myself with panels as the story unfolds.
Emily, having sat next to JC, is now stirring her carrot matcha latte. Meanwhile, JC is freaking out in the inside, not because she’s particularly antisocial, but she might be crushing on Emily and Em sitting next to her isn’t quite how she expected the situation to unravel! To break the ice, Em asks JC what’s she working on….
Still working on streamlining these posts, so.. *ahem* bear with the layout changes as we go!
Emily steps up to the Bunny Brews counter and orders her usual drink, a carrot matcha latte, and looks for a place to sit. Ahh, yes, let’s ask that woman awkwardly staring! Wonder what she’s working on…
Meet Emily! She runs a local sparring gym, teaching ladies the importance of self-defense in the face of uncertain times. She’s stopping at Bunny Brews before heading to the gym to get fueled up with her favorite morning pick-me-up. JC can’t help but stare at this *incredible!* woman as she makes her entrance.
Meet JC Kitsune! A brilliant senior engineer at Biception, an up and coming wearable tech company poised to disrupt the smartphone industry. They’re using Metro Bay as their testing grounds for *Link*, a new communication device promising a return to visceral connections, and they’re already making a splash. JC likes to start her day bright and early at her favorite little cafe, Bunny Brews! Where she finds joy in people watching and plugging away at her new hobby project. Today though, she’s about to meet Emily Bunilova, a fervent, peculiar character who immediately captures JC’s undivided attention.
Thus the Emby Chronicles begin….
